Oil from certain nuts, beans, and seeds can also be used, though extracting it would require a proper press, and quantities of the plants in question that we're unlikely to have at any point in the foreseeable future. Animal fat is the easiest to both acquire in the necessary quantity and render for use."

"Lye, on the other hand, is simple to make even in this place, if rather time consuming. We need simply soak wood ash in rainwater and wait. Eventually, the lye will leach out into the water, which can then be used for a variety of purposes, including soap making."
