Mini-event - You Can Eat *ANYTHING*.... Once.
Dec. 15th, 2024 03:02 amIt was still slushy and uncomfortable to do much outside of the school building, and getting to the shore would be an absolutely miserably slog, but... the things one might do for some fresh air...
Both those risking the remaining slush and cold to go out and those wandering inward would notice some new plants around the school... By now the lack of options might make nearly anything seem palatable but... Most of the people on the Isle have been there long enough to be wary, right?
Right?
The lovely white mushrooms that are growing out of some of the walls look like something you'd see in Auradon, especially as some of them have some light pink or tan to them. But these Destroying Angel Mushrooms are very much more Isle Style than safe. This variety specifically acts fast, a single bite is enough to cause effects, though thankfully they're not as bad as their real life counterparts. Effects occour as soon as any part of the mushroom is put into the mouth - or otherwise absorbed - and include terrible pain as well as delusions. The person eating the plant will feel like they are dying and will see whoever comes to their aid as the person they most wish to say a final goodbye to. Hear them that way too.
Effects will last one hour per mushroom sampled. And yes if someone goes for a second bite, the mushroom can affect them again.
The small berries growing on the vines in the walls look shriveled and a muted grey-green. But maybe that means they are actually naturally occurring and safe to eat, right?
Right?
You know it is bad when they measure Scovilles in the millions. 2.6 of them to be exact. And there is no fresh milk anywhere on the Isle! You have got to do something to beat the heat, but what?
BUT WHAT?!?!?!?!?
Characters who are specifically temperature related or temperature sensitive in either direction will feel this especially strongly. This means anyone who is, I don't know... say the personification of Winter itself? Or an actual tree? Or even someone who could naturally breathe fire will find this WAY TOO SPICY. And of course if they're used to spice and think they can handle it...
This pepper grew on the Isle. Why are you seriously still expecting normal rules to apply.
There is no one immune to this heat. Finding ways to cure it... might take some creative thinking.
Mod squad doesn't have an answer for all y'all on this one. Good luck!
Buttercups! They look so pretty and with a name like that, they have to be good to eat, right? Right?!
This is the Isle, of course (not) right! Anyone trying to eat these highly toxic flowers will find themselves paralyzed, and look comatose, for a good hour per petal eaten unless someone comes to wake them up. Tradition calls for a kiss of true love. But will that work on the Isle? Will it really?
Also, you know... whoever ate them only looks like they are in a peaceful coma. Too paralyzed to even scream in pain, the poor dears.
Another odd plant has popped up. Foulques and Eli and River Song might recognize the reason these thick dark green - almost black, really - vines gathered all in one place, right at the entrance to the school. They are almost impossible to pull up, they resist all attempts to cut them, and even biting through them seems impossible. Those who try, however, will find their limbs all going weak about an hour after the attempt, and they will stay painfully weak and unable to hold them up for as many hours as they made attempts. Someone is going to need some help, some looking after.
There is a path of the weed like vines going from that spot where there is almost a foot wide circle of them, to the base of one of the Doom Stones. The Doom Stone reads "It is better to have lost than to have loved". The vines terminate in a pair of entwined flowers. Blood red flowers with black throats and black tipped petals. The flowers would prove as impervious to pulling or cutting as the vines would. The petals could be removed, but they'd grow back swiftly. And the petals are highly highly poisonous. And have no taste. The scent isn't even a warning as it isn't strong enough to be smelled over the foul smells of the Isle itself.
A single petal will put the person who ingested it in a coma for a day.
Two for a week.
Three, and we have our first test of the death mechanic.
Anyone familiar with plants, while not being able to identify the flowers unless they spoke to someone who knows of them, will have a strong sense that these beautiful flowers are dangerous. Instinct will be strong here, though will fail to give guidance as to what to do with that knowledge.
New fern like plants would have also appeared, in pots, inside lockers. For... some reason. While looking like normal enough plants, with leaves of dark green and a light green so fair it is almost white, they would be ridiculously heavy. The edges are dull but thicker to the touch than they look.
This particular Pilea Cadierei Aluminum - Watermelon Aluminum plant is actually... aluminum and water! Except that the metal is somehow worse than rusted, it is corroded. Attempts to eat it for those who don't eat metal will probably end with tooth pain and lacerated lips. For those who do eat metal however...
It will make every bone in his body feel like it is rusted through and unable to hold him up. The bones won't actually break, but the pain will be that immense, feeling like every bone is on the verge of not just breaking, but shattering. Each bite will not only make the effect last longer - one hour per bite - but will also make the pain worse. Exponentially.
As for those who try to use the leaves, stem, or other parts of it for tools... as soon as it is removed from the main body of the plant, the plant part will become brittle. In the case of the leaves, they will just fall apart, crumbling to a mildly toxic dust.
In the case of stems or roots... those are brittle as well but filled with rancid foul water. Just holding one can shatter it, splashing the area with a full bucket's worth of foul water. Even though it didn't look like it could hold that much. The water stinks badly enough to water even the most stalwart eyes and will make anyone who drinks it sick. Those who are splashed with it... should probably wash up as best they can, because the water is also more than mildly acidic.
Peapods! Finally something that should be safe! Right? They're even called sweet peas, for those who recognize them, so they should be sweet. And edible. And safe. Right?
Sorry, sweatpea. These plants are actually quite toxic. Especially their flowers and seeds. And on the Isle... well.....
Anyone who eats a little of one of these plants will have an hour where they have weird random holes in their memory. Eat more and they might spend hours forgetting key things. Eat two whole pods worth of peas... Hello, amnesia. Have fun with the character not knowing who they were or where they were or... well... anything. Can last anywhere from two hours to two days....
This festive looking plant can be found growing around any other suddenly appearing plant. And it looks quite tasty. And... it is! For the first few berries, anyway. Then the taste will get increasingly worse with each berry eaten and pain will start from the limbs inward! And the pain will not go away! At least... not on its own. To make the pain pass the person who ate it must show honest affection for someone else. One show of affection for each berry, and the same person cannot be used as a cure twice in a row. Time to tell your friends you love them.... Because this pain is a fate worse than bad breath - which you also now have. FUN!
At the end of the week, all the plants will vanish, including any parts harvested from them, and all ill effects will vanish as well.
With one exception.
The red flowers with the black tips.
Their vines will vanish. But the twin flowers themselves will remain by the Doom Stone. Blood red and black against the slush.
