First Awareness

Those used to this by now probably knew what it meant when they felt their magic return for a moment. For the rest, suddenly their powers were back. Just for a few minutes, but a lot could be done in a few minutes. If the person even noticed their powers were back, that is.

Of course those on the shore might have seen the hazy indistinct shape through the barrier coming closer, might have seen the moment the hole in the barrier opened. Might have seen King Ben leading people down a gangplank through the barrier with crates of supplies....

Unions, Re And Otherwise

Once the supplies were unloaded, the barrier was sealed up again. King Ben seemed to be in charge during the unloading, Once the barrier was closed again, by the green magic streaming from the Queen's finger, it was Mal who seemed to be in charge.

"Alright, listen up. We have 2 hours and the clock is ticking. I'm not FG but we're keeping to a deadline anyway. If you want to come to Auradon or know someone you want us to bring back, you have 2 hours to convince us. You and everyone else, sharing the same 2 hours. Along with anyone who has a supply request for our next visit, or updates. Those of you bringing supplies to the school, time to get cracking. Two hours passes faster than midnight at the ball."

Those What Remain

Once those going back to Auradon had left and the barrier was back in place, it was for those who remained on the Isle to sort the supplies and figure out how to get done everything that needed to be done with the people that remained.

Mallia sighed and shoved her little clipboard back into her pocket. "Come here, poppet... You needn't be so upset." A step forward, reaching to take their hand. "They clearly have some business to attend to, and I'm awaiting Foulques' return as well. I'm Mallia. And you...?"

"I won't let any stinking humans hurt my big brother! I want to go with them and keep him safe!" the kid protested, trying to get free. Mal all but dumped them on the ground in front of Mallia. They tried to take off as they tried to get up.

"Ben isn't going to hurt him," she said, crouching down to kneel there on the sand and catching the kid's sleeve. "Honestly, poppet. He's not. They'll be fine, and you ought wait here for their return."

"Let go of me, stupid human!" They tried to kick her instead.

Oh, how lovely... well, this was a kid, and they were already a little off balance from all the struggle there on the sand -- and far more off balance once she saw the kick wind up. Then she pulled them toward her, turning that arm aside to give them a quick spin around, so that they'd end up falling onto her lap as she sat down the rest of the way. Chara would have their back to her, at that point, feet likely set off through the sand. At least she was pretty soft; the fall wouldn't hurt.

With any luck, none of the bit of sand and the little dust cloud would hit the kid... not with her between them and it, and holding them somewhat against her like that. The big, low puff just sort of slid away from them as it settled back down again, kicked up by a gust from something just then, something that had been behind her....

"That's hardly nice," she said, smile fading. "And I recommend you pay more attention, lest you offend someone."

"I don't wanna be nice, I want my brother!" they cried, trying to squirm free, terrified.

"He'll be back shortly, I'm certain!"

Ugh, this wasn't going well....

"I have something for you," she tried, already moving to get back up, putting an arm around the kid... she'd just... pick them up with her. Move her other arm like so, reposition them so she could get her other foot back under her quickly, and shift the kid's weight as she pushed off of it, rising up onto her other foot as she did--

The move would give Chara a good view of what she'd had to do to sit down like that: her wings were out behind her. They'd kicked up the little cloud of sand as they'd had to spread a bit behind her, lest she sit on them and bend them in ways they weren't entirely willing to bend. And now, standing up like this, shifting her weight backwards to get upright quicker, they rose up quickly, acting as wings often did, catching the air to help her balance herself by pushing off of it. Giant, velvety-black wings that lightened swiftly into a deep dark purple for most of the last row of panes in their back edges. Those... those did not belong on a human. And they were moving. Those weren't props. Weren't simply costume pieces....

Seeing the wings, Chara stilled, eyes wide. "Y...you're a monster too?" they asked, voice an awed whisper.

"Not at all," she said, finally finding her balance there on the sand now that the kid had stopped squirming so much. Her wings folded back down quickly, blowing up another small puff of sand over her feet as she shifted the littler one's weight more securely onto her hip. "I'm elder fae. A fairy, technically."

But... since it seemed to calm the kid down....

She peeked back over her shoulder, lifting her wings more deliberately this time, and unfolding them again to give a better view. "Have you seen a fairy before?"

"I've seen Whimsalots and Migospels.... They're monsters like me and Asriel and Mr. Dad Guy and Mom lady. You hafta be a monster... but... how do you keep the humans from killing you?" they asked in a small scared whisper, glancing at Mal.

"...I think, perhaps, that that word means something very different to you, than it does to me. Where I'm from, it's naught but an insult. Elves, dragons, unicorns, fairies, and many other manners of being one may find strange or unlike oneself, we call alker, not monster. And I think perhaps you're being a bit quick to judge, as well. Not all humans mean anyone harm... and not all who appear human are."

"Monsters are those of us who aren't humans and are nice and kind and just want to live and see the son and be left alone. Humans are the mean ones who want to hurt and kill and locked us up Underground."

[queen_butterfly]

"Again... that may be what that word means where you're from, but that is not what that word means, from whence I've come. And there are all sorts of humans. Not just terrible ones. I'm sorry you've apparently had to deal with some of those that mean ill, but that really isn't fair to all of the rest of them."

"I don't have to be fair," they said, sulking. "They killed Asriel..." their voice wavered with a hiccup as they tried not to cry. "Just for being a monster."

"And I don't have to be fair either, do I. I could decide to dislike all children, because some of them would try to catch and keep me, when I was very small. But refusing to be better gets one nowhere, it only creates more problems."

"I just wanna help all Monsters an never hafta see a human ever again."

[queen_butterfly]

"We all have wants, poppet. Some, a fair deal kinder than others... but helping one needn't mean being senselessly hostile to another. Perhaps the common factor wasn't simply that they were humans. What if it were something else, and they all merely happened to also look like humans?"

Chara seemed to take that as an attack. "I'm a monster!" the kid protested defensively.

"I wasn't discussing what you prefer to call yourself. I'm saying that them being human was almost assuredly not what caused them to behave terribly. Perhaps it was that their parents lied to them when they were children, about anyone who wasn't also human, and they believed them? And because of that, they grew to hate others? That happens a lot where I'm from as well, unfortunately...."

"Why does it matter why?! They still killed him! They still banished all monsters they couldn't kill!"

[queen_butterfly]

"It matters," she said, "because you seem to think that it was because they were humans. And therefore you're against all humans. And I'm informing you that you're being terribly unfair, and quite disagreeably judgmental toward people here who don't deserve it."

"They were judgermental first!" they protested, going back to trying to get free.

"The people here were? Howso? ...Who was it?" Good luck; she still had the kid on her hip, and was now making her way back to where the cargo was.

"Back home! When I died and Asriel was trying to bring my body to the flowers!" They were too angry to think about what they were saying. "I told Asriel that was what humans were like! But Asriel didn't listen!" Crying now and struggling harder.
